Muir Woods is located just 17 miles northwest of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge. Our sightseeing tour includes two stops. We will spend approximately 75 to 90 minutes in Muir Woods and while there is no guaranteed stop in Sausalito (which is directly across the bay from San Francisco to the north), some guests may request a stop there to disembark and return to San Francisco on their own by ferry.

Muir Woods - Sausalito Tour Description:

You'll marvel at the size of the giant redwoods at John Muir Woods.

Muir Woods is located just 17 miles northwest of San Francisco just off Highway 1. The park was named for John Muir, a naturalist who was instrumental in establishing the National Park system. This National Monument is comprised of 560 acres of redwood forest. Cathedral and Bohemian Groves contain the largest Coastal redwoods - up to 252-feet tall and 14-feet across.

The 3 to 4 hour Muir Woods tour starts in San Francisco and heads through the Marina and the Presidio across the Golden Gate Bridge. From this point, there are spectacular views of San Francisco and the Marin Headlands.

The tour continues north before winding along picturesque Highway 1 to Muir Woods. This 550-acre National Monument is home to Coastal Redwoods, some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. You will be given a map and guide to the park showing various trails for a self-guided tour. Visitors are encouraged to visit the paved main trail that offers educational exhibits on the majestic redwood trees -- some known to be 1,000 years old. There are six miles of walking trails. The park is home to 50 species of birds, black-tailed deer, steelhead trout, and hundreds of other wild inhabitants. There is also a small cafe, a bookstore and a gift shop. The tour spends approximately one hour at Muir Woods.

Muir Woods is located only 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in an isolated canyon. The park offers solitude, interpretive displays and programs, and numerous hiking trails. The entrance fee to Muir Woods is included with this tour.

From the redwoods, the tour heads back along the coastal road to Sausalito. The drive-through tour here will allow you to see a bit of the bay views and fabulous mansions. Sausalito is home to some of the country's wealthiest citizens, and the views of Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and the San Francisco skyline are breathtaking.

If you specifically request a stop in Sausalito, you may be dropped there and can return to San Francisco by ferry (at your own expense).

Sausalito is located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, on the south-eastern tip of Marin County. Sausalito was named by 18th century Spanish explorers for the "little willow" trees -Saucelito which were found on the banks of its streams. Sausalito is a small town of only 7,500 residents.

Please Note: The Muir Woods - Sausalito Tour with Alcatraz Tour lasts 6 to 8 hours. Exact timing will depend upon departure times for Alcatraz tickets available for the date of your tour. Stopping off in Sausalito is not possible if you have afternoon Alcatraz tickets.

If you are not staying at a hotel where we pick-up, you can meet the tour at our office near Fisherman's Wharf; the address and phone will be sent to you in the email confirmation sent after you make your reservations.

Airport Hotel Pick-Up: Pick-ups are available from designated San Francisco Airport area hotels, but anyone being picked up at an Airport area hotel must pay a $10.00 per person pickup fee on the day of the tour.

Duration: 6 to 8 hours.

Departure Times: 9:00 am and 2:00 pm (also 11:00 am from May through October).

Child Rates: 5 to 11. Children under 5 may ride in an adult's lap for free.

Meals: This tour does not include a meal.
